Developed Zhuhai shows the way with gree
New expressways in Zhuhai in Guangdong Province will soon be put into operation, according to the 2007 city government work report.
The city has made substantial progress in infrastructure construction, the report says.
More than 230 kilometers of roads have been built and renovated in the past three years.
While new projects, including a railway between Zhuhai and Guangzhou, a bridge linking Zhuhai, Hong Kong and Macao, and two docks each with a handling capacity of 50,000 tons, are pressing ahead, so are several key power and hydraulic engineering projects.
Environmental protection in the city construction is of prime concern to local government, says the work report.
Thus in recent years, the authorities have undertaken a green drive, launching various awareness campaigns, planting trees along avenues, adding green coverage, and renovating parks.
The city government has also clamped down on industrial pollution and encouraged efficient production with optimum energy and resource consumption, seeking to make Zhuhai a more environmentally friendly city.
The government plans to invest in building and renovating environmental monitoring facilities for air and water pollution this year, the work report says.
Meanwhile, three new sewage treatment stations will be added, aimed at strengthening the handling capacity of the existing sewage treatment network.
The green efforts of the government have paid off handsomely. As a model eco-friendly city, Zhuhai gets top billing in terms of environment protection in Guangdong Province as well as in the rest of the country.
This eco-friendly image has helped Zhuhai win bids for hosting an international auto race.
Such international sporting events, in turn, provide an ideal opportunity to showcase the city to the world.
The impressive performance of the city has also caused an influx of overseas investors. Foreign direct investment reached 1.96 billion U.S. dollars in the past three years.
Thus benefiting from its eco-friendly image, Zhuhai plans to continue its efforts in cleaning up its air.
According to the work report, green coverage of the city is expected to exceed 60 percent in the next five years.
