China's Three Gorges Dam Takes Environmental Toll, WSJ Reports

China's Three Gorges Dam project on the Yangtze River is suffering from unexpected problems such as landslides and pollution, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The creation of a 640-kilometer-long reservoir has eroded the river's shores, raising concern that a mountainside may collapse, the newspaper said, citing sources including a report this year by scientists at the Imperial College London.

The reservoir is filling with sewage, the newspaper said.

"We thought of all the possible issues," Weng Lida, the former head of the Yangtze River Water Resources Protection Commission, was quoted as saying. "But the problems are all more serious than we expected."
