Caution Urged in Buying Digital TV Receivers
Hong Kong Principal Assistant Secretary for Commerce & Economic Development Kevin Choi reminds consumers to exercise caution when buying digital terrestrial television receivers.
Speaking on a radio talk show, Choi said the Office of the Telecommunications Authority has introduced a voluntary labelling scheme to help consumers make informed choices when they purchase receivers.
There are two labels under the scheme, namely the basic-tier receiver and the higher-tier receiver.
The former is for receiving the four existing channels transmitted in digital format. The latter is for receiving both high and standard definition television programmes.
So far no basic-tier receiver has the label while 16 out of 23 models of higher-tier receivers have passed technical tests and got the labels.
Choi reminded consumers to buy products with valid labels.
Since the official launch of DTT services the authority has received 35 calls concerning the reception quality of conventional analogue television.
The Government has issued technical guidelines to system contractors and will continue its publicity and education drive on the issue.
