China Netcom<906> announced on Tuesday that it lost 450,200 fixed-line phone subscribers last month to record a total of 109.605 million subscribers by the end of February.
The company also recorded a total of 510, 800 broadband subscribers to reach 21.041 million broadband users in the period. This is however 252, 500 less than that in January 2008.
This is part of an ongoing trend where wireless carriers such as China Mobile<941> and China Unicom<600050><762> are gaining market share and customers through aggressive price cuts and the launch of new products. Free incoming-call packages are said to be very popular promotion items that make people switch from a fixed-line to a wireless phone.
