China Netcom, UTStarcom pioneers new security technology

NYSE-listed China Netcom<906> will work closely with Nasdaq-listed UTStarcom Inc. in pioneering the use of the latter's IPVS system - an IP video surveillance solution based upon UTStarcom's RollingStream(TM) IPTV technology to serve as the main design and deployment platform for the Safe-City project in Benxi, Liaoning province.

The Safe-City video surveillance project in Benxi is a local government initiative by the Benxi Public Security Bureau in an attempt to scientifically plan security measures, control and mobilization within the city, improving urban safety drastically.

UTStarcom will undertake the overall design, implementation and construction of the entire surveillance system in this project. China Netcom's Benxi subsidiary will assist in planning the ideal surveillance points and system functionality.

In the preliminary phase of the project, UTStarcom will set up 700 surveillance points throughout Benxi and all security surveillance facilities in Benxi will use the IP-based surveillance system for monitoring and safety deployment purposes.

UTStarcom is a U.S company with headquarters in Alameda, California, and Beijing. It is a global leader in IP access infrastructure products that allows service providers to deliver high-quality, affordable voice, data, and video services in both emerging and established telecommunications markets.
