China targets RMB132.65 bln laptop revenue in 2012

China's laptop market revenue is expected to hit RMB 132.65 billion by 2012, growing 21.5% annually, and the desktop market revenue will reach RMB 112.11 billion, with an annual growth rate of 5.4%, according to the CCID Consulting, a research firm under the Ministry of Information Industry.

Last year, the laptop revenue hit RMB 50.01 billion (US$7.04 billion), up 33% year-on-year, tripled the growth rate of the domestic computer market, while the revenue of the desktop computer sector was only RMB 86.07 billion, up 3.4% year-on-year, according to CCID.

China has become the global No.1 laptop producer, and the country produced 80 million laptops in 2007, accounting for 70% of the world's total production. Laptop sales in China witnessed a rapid growth, which has squeezed the market share of desktop computers.

The rapid growth in the laptop sales was mainly boosted by the price cut and the available multitude of functions. The laptop price has declined RMB 1,000 in 2007 on average, and it will continue to drop this year, according to sources with CCID.
