China's per capital floor space triples in 2 decades

The per capital floor space for urban residents in China has over tripled in the past twenty years, increasing at an average rate of one square meter a year since the early 1980s, according to Qi Ji, Vice Minister of Construction.

At present, the per capita housing space for residents in cities and towns reached 28 square meters, said Qi, and commercial houses have become the major housing supply in cities and townships, investment in which accounts for 85% of the total.

According to Qi, over 40 million urban householders in the country improved their living conditions by purchasing commercial houses or second-hand houses.

The average property price in China's 70 large and medium-sized cities last December surged 10.5% from the same period of the year earlier.

The country has about 400 million urban population, and they found it hard to buy a house due to the high house prices. In this case, Chinese government has decided to build low-rent houses for urban poor people this year.
