SH Pudong Airport set to open new terminal on Mar. 26

Shanghai Pudong Airport's expansion project, including Terminal 2, the third runaway, and the west freight transfer zone, will be completed and put into use on Mar. 26, according to the press conference held by the Shanghai government on Monday.

The expansion project, with an estimated investment of RMB 20 billion (US$2.82 billion), will enable the Pudong airport to handle 600 million passengers annually, 4.2 million tons of post and freight, and 4.6 million departing and arriving flights.

The airport handled 28.95 million passengers last year, and handled 2.51 million tonnes on the cargo side, which makes it the world's fourth biggest airport cargo hub.

China plans to build nearly 100 new airports through the country by 2010 to meet the increasing demand, including the world's highest in Tibet. The total cost will exceed US$60 billion.
