Japan's top white goods retailer to tap into China

Yamada Denki, Japan's largest home appliance retailer said on Monday that it will open its first store in mainland China by 2010, Japanese media reported.

The store, to be located in shanghai, will sell high-end household appliances made in Japan such as plat panel TV targeting China's wealthy coastal residents. The operation area of the store is expected to reach 5,000 to 10,000 sq meters.

The company is seeking opportunities in overseas markets as growth in its home market has been seeing a sharp decline resulting from the nation's dropping population, the report said.

Yamada Denki operates 1,074 outlets in Japan, selling a wide range of electronic products. In the first quarter of this year, it booked a sales value of US$17.3 billion.
