Power plants reserve thermal coal for 12 days

On August 18, China's power plants stored 23.42 million tonnes of coal in total, enough for 12 days' consumption. Comparing to July, power plants' coal stockpile increased 4.02 million tonnes and usable days increased by 2.

Thermal coal stockpile in major power plants in Beijing, Tianjing and Tangshan was 2.23 million tonnes, which can be used for 13 days, an increase of 0.65 million tonnes from July or 1.48 million tonnes from June. Whereas usable days increased by 9 compared to June.

Li Yangzhe of NDRC commented upon the above figure that the situation have turned in our favour. Prices for coal as well as oil are stablized and coal supplies are expanded. It is due to coal price limiting and electricity price hike in his opinion.

"But again", he said, 'coal supply is still in short of its demand, especially when Winter is coming. The country will try its best to ensure power plants have enough thermal coal stocks before Winter electricity usage peak.'
