China tourism revenue tops one trillion yuan in '08

China's tourism revenue continued to grow in 2008 despite the global financial crisis, according to the National Tourism Administration.

Totalling 1.16 trillion yuan, or 170 billion U.S. dollars, the figure is a 5.8 percent growth from 2007. Of that, 874.9 billion yuan was earned from domestic travelers, a year-on-year growth of 13 percent. But the revenue from foreign tourists was down ten percent to 283.9 billion yuan over the same period.

The 2008 slump came with a drop in international tourists of 1.4 percent to 130 million. This includes people from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. But the number of travelers from other countries was down even more, by 6.8 percent to 24.3 million from one year earlier, a knock-on effect of the global economic crisis.
