High hopes for Thermo Fisher

THERMO Fisher Scientific Inc, a leading United States analytical technology and laboratory equipment provider, expects China to become its second largest market in three years.

The company, which aims to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer, expects continued strong demand from Chinese customers such as drug makers, hospitals, research institutions and government agencies, said Marc Casper, an executive vice president.

It supplied equipment and technical support for doping tests and security checks during the Beijing Olympics and also offers analysis in food safety, a sector seen to become more important.

Sales in China exceeded US$300 million for the first time last year after a double-digit growth, Casper said without giving an exact growth figure. This year's growth could be similar to 2008's, he added.

China could become Thermo Fisher's No. 2 market in two to three years after the US, Casper said.

At present the second largest market is Germany where the company had sales of over US$500 million in 2008. Thermo Fisher's global sales totalled US$10.5 billion.
