More than 633 million mobile subscribers in China

China, the world's largest mobile market, continues its expansion and it will soon have more mobile users than Europe's total population.

According to China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), in November 2008, there were 633.84 million Chinese mobile subscribers, served by only three carriers: China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom.

The number of subscribers represents only around 47.3% of the country's population, which is estimated at roughly over 1,320 million. This means that there's a huge growth potential in China, and companies like Nokia and Motorola (which have leading market shares) will surely try to take advantage of this.

Another interesting fact is that, during the same month of 2008 (November), Chinese mobile users sent no less than 56.87 billion short messages (SMS).
